Excellent coverage of a cover I have seen a million times. (To be honest, I thought it might be a Chaykin cover until I did my research.)
ReplyDeleteLike Derek I was a huge Star Wars fan as a kid, seeing Ep 4 in the theater. But also like him, I just never read the Marvel comic. In retrospect, it's strange. I was a huge comic kid obviously but also collected all the Star Wars figures, thought of stories for the characters, etc. How did the streams not cross??
I haven't read this issue but I love the ending, how one set of events can compel people into action, often diametrically. Some POV kid character joining the Empire, clearly the villains, must have been out of left field back then.
And now having heard the story and knowing the ending, I have to believe the cover isn't Darth saying 'I find your lack of faith disturbing' and more 'I want YOU for the Empire' mirroring Uncle Sam. Don't know if I have ever thought of that before.
I guess Derek gets a pass for not making that connection on the cover, seeing as he’s Canadian. But how did I not see it? Podcast fail.
