E&E #030 - Movie Countdown IV: Citizens on Patrol

Alan's Eyes & Ears #030 - Movie Countdown IV

In this 30th episode of this podcast endeavor, Alan begins by covering feedback from a bunch of prior episodes.

After that, movie buffs Darrin & Ruth Sutherland join the Professor to talk about the most recent 20 movies that he has watched, counting them down to #1!

Where do the first 2 Jason Bourne movies rank? Or Creed? Or Dungeons & Dragons: Honour Among Thieves? How about Miss Potter, The Last Voyage of the Demeter, Looper, or the other dozen or so other movies he watched?

And which movie (or two) do the Sutherlands totally disagree with Alan on?

  1. From what I kept track of in my head, Time Bandits was the dividing line: that and older, I've seen, newer... um...

I really should get around to Dune and the Blade Runner sequel. (To drift a bit, I have the latest-but-one Mad Max sequel on DVD, for cheap, and should get around to watching it Real Soon Now. (August should be a good month for clearing the DVR; now and in February TCM programs more popular old movies everybody has seen, August by choosing a star of the day and showing a day's worth of movies. By the way, Friday the 8th will be James Garner, they have the "Support" duology, and an interesting one: The Americanization of Emily, that gives him a character that plays against his natural charm.))

On adaptations: I agree that one should capture the feel of the book, and note that there is probably at least one memorable scene that needs to be visualized. In debate on some forum I once put forth that, to be fair to an adaptation, you shouldn't be too familiar with the source, say not having read or reread it since the start of filming. That is approximately the experience of most of the audience. By the way, do you know recent numbers for the audience? What about the old saying that a bomb of a movie was seen by more people than a best-selling book, or a ratings basement TV show by more than a blockbuster?

    1. Thanks for the feedback.

Thanks for the TCM schedule update.

And yes, the best-selling comic books are read by way fewer people than the 20th ranked network TV show, which is watched by fewer people than big hit movies.

  2. Great episode and always good to hear Darrin and Ruth. You can tell they love and appreciate movies!

I could comment on almost all of these but I'll try to keep it brief and on only a few.

American Underdog - If i wanted to watch a Kurt Warner 'movie', I'd pop my Super Bowl XXXVI DVD. Best friggin' movie ever. Greatest Show on Turf??? Ha!

Last Voyage of the Demeter - it takes a lot for me to stop watching a movie but about 30 min in, I turned it off. Perhaps it is because I know what the Demeter is like when it lands so there was no surprise for me. (I did sit through all of Nosferatu and thought it was terrible.)

Time Bandits - at #15??? That ain't right. I have a lot of nostalgia for this. My dad took me to see it. It was the first movie I saw with Sean Connery. But it's magic has stuck with me. I have 'don't touch it ... it's pure evil' in my lexicon. And like Darrin, I like David Warner in anything, especially Tron and the Omen.

D&D - as a D&D player and well-versed in the rules, I loved this. Light-hearted, good spirited. Plus, my party also makes crazy plans that rarely work out well. So this worked.

Bourne Identity - the best of the Bournes in my mind. Much like Die Hard, as the Bourne movies progressed, his 'powers' and sheer invulnerability increased. I'll watch this one over the others for sure.

Casino Royale - I love this Bond. LOOOOOVE it. Eva Green is perfect. Craig is brooding and very physical as Bond. There are no super-fancy gadgets in this, just guns and fists. This might be my favorite Bond of all. And Green is my favorite Bond 'Girl'.

Dune 2 - I love the Dune books, especially the first one which I have read a half dozen times. I don't love the Villaneuve movies which are close to the book abnd beautiful. But the films subtly change the motivations of Jessica and make Chani more important. I don't need the sacred text of Dune changed.

Blade Runner 2049 - I am a HUGE Blade Runner fan (the original Director's Cut being my fave version) and so I worried any sequel might sully the first. So I avoided it for a long time. When I finally saw it, I was watching it with such trepidation, afraid it was going to suck, that when it was over I think I was overthinking it and said 'not bad'. I recently rewatched it, but in a much more relaxed state of mind. And I have to agree with Darrin, it is pretty darn good. Worthy.

Laura - what can I say. I love Tierney. I love this movie. The cast is brilliant. The mystery is brilliant. And Gene can even make a rain slicker and 'Gorton Fisherman' hat look beautiful. I loathe the character of Leydecker, from his smarmy superiority to his vengeful jealousy.

One last comment. I haven't seen Miss Potter but I read the extended Potter books to my girls all the time. So I am looking for this one now!

    Great show!
