E&E #036 - Comic Book Genres: Romance

In this 36th episode, Alan continues a (fingers crossed) monthly series of episodes featuring the comic book genre assigned to that month. Which makes this episode a discussion of ... romance comics! And also romances IN comics.

What romance comics has the Professor been reading the last few years? How do Iowa's Joe and Derek Crabbe answer dating questions from 50 years ago? Who are their (and some listeners) favorite couple?

  1. Great episodes with great guests! Such an interesting discussion and interesting books to bring to the table.

Surprised, as always, that there wasn't more Gwen love with Peter. Makes zero sense to me. I am 'all in' in Gwen.

I didn't know we could give non-comic answers so a few comments.
    1) I will second the Bulma/Vegeta romance on Dragon Ball. Both are such dominant, forceful personalities. And yet they have this passionate and supportive relationship. It just works.
    2) If I had to pick an anime, I'll pick Robotech's Rick Hunter and Lisa Hayes. She is an older woman; he is a young hotshot. But during the Zentraedi war, they find each other and learn they love each other. Anyone on #TeamMinmay is wrong.

    3) You know my love for old movies. You could say that my favorite romance is Rick and Ilsa in Casablanca even though she flies off with Victor Laszlo. Ilsa admires Victor but she loves Rick. And he loves Ilsa but both know the world needs them to sacrifice that love. Tragic and beautiful.
But I said I 'might' say that.
My actual favorite romance is Laura and Alec in Brief Encounter. Another tragic and beautiful romance where the two sacrifice their love to remain with their current partners. I well with tears every time I see the ending. The truest love on screen.
