Alan's Eyes & Ears #030 - Movie Countdown IV
In
this 30th episode of this podcast endeavor, Alan begins by covering feedback from a bunch of prior episodes.
After that, movie buffs Darrin & Ruth Sutherland join the Professor to talk about the most recent 20 movies that he has watched, counting them down to #1!
Where do the first 2 Jason Bourne movies rank? Or Creed? Or Dungeons & Dragons: Honour Among Thieves? How about Miss Potter, The Last Voyage of the Demeter, Looper, or the other dozen or so other movies he watched?
And which movie (or two) do the Sutherlands totally disagree with Alan on?

From what I kept track of in my head, Time Bandits was the dividing line: that and older, I've seen, newer... um...
ReplyDeleteI really should get around to Dune and the Blade Runner sequel. (To drift a bit, I have the latest-but-one Mad Max sequel on DVD, for cheap, and should get around to watching it Real Soon Now. (August should be a good month for clearing the DVR; now and in February TCM programs more popular old movies everybody has seen, August by choosing a star of the day and showing a day's worth of movies. By the way, Friday the 8th will be James Garner, they have the "Support" duology, and an interesting one: The Americanization of Emily, that gives him a character that plays against his natural charm.))
On adaptations: I agree that one should capture the feel of the book, and note that there is probably at least one memorable scene that needs to be visualized. In debate on some forum I once put forth that, to be fair to an adaptation, you shouldn't be too familiar with the source, say not having read or reread it since the start of filming. That is approximately the experience of most of the audience. By the way, do you know recent numbers for the audience? What about the old saying that a bomb of a movie was seen by more people than a best-selling book, or a ratings basement TV show by more than a blockbuster?
Thanks for the feedback.
DeleteThanks for the TCM schedule update.
And yes, the best-selling comic books are read by way fewer people than the 20th ranked network TV show, which is watched by fewer people than big hit movies.
